Textual Exercise :-

Q1 -What does the writer mean by 'the fiery misery' of those subjected to make up?
Ans - The make up department had the look of a hair cutting salon. There were incandescent lights at all angles around half a dozen mirrors.  These lights were glowing with heat. So, those who were subjected to make up had to suffer a lot of hardship. The writer calls it their 'fiery misery'.

Q2- What is the example of national integration that the author refers to?
Ans- The make up department was first headed by a Bengali. He was succeeded by a Maharashtrian. He was assisted by  men from Dharwad, Andhra Pradesh, Burma and the usual local Tamils. Thus we can say that the make up department was an example of national integration.

Q3-What work did the 'office boy' do in the Gemini Studio? Why did he join the studios? Why was he so disappointed?
Ans- The office boy had the responsibility of doing the make up of the junior artists who played crowd in films. He had joined the studio in the hope of becoming a top actor, screen writer, director or lyricist. He was a bit of poet also. He was disappointed that his talent was being wasted in the studio.

Q4- Why did the author appear to doing nothing at the studio?
Ans- The author's duty was to cut out newspaper cuttings on a wide variety of subjects and to store them in files. When people saw him tearing newspaper all the day , they thought that he is doing nothing. 

Q5- Who was Subbu's principal?
Ans- Subbu was the no 2 at the Gemini Studio. So he identified himself with Mr S S Vasan, who was his principal or Boss. He turned his entire sincerity to his principal's advantage.

Q6- Subbu is describes as a many sided genius. List four of his special ability?
Ans- Subbu was a talented man. He was a many sided genius. He was a great director in films. He was a good poet also. Thirdly, he was an amazing actor who could play all kind of roles. He never got a leading role but he performed  very well in whatever role he got. Finally, he was a charitable person. He helped and fed a lot of people. 

Q7-Why was the legal advisor referred to as the opposite by others?
Ans- The legal advisor of the studio  was a lawyer. He had been engaged to give advice to the company. But he seldom gave any true legal advice . He brought a sad end to the bright career of a heroine. He even made a film which flopped. So he was referred to the opposite by others. 

Q8-  What made the lawyer stand out from the others at Gemini Studio?
Ans- The other staff members of the Gemini Studio wore khadi uniforms. But the lawyer wore coat pant ad a tie. His coat looked like a coat of mail. He looked alone and helpless. He was a man of cold logic in a crowd of dreamers. So he stood out from the others at Gemini Studio. 

Q9- Why was the Moral Rearmament Army welcomed at Gemini Studio?
Ans- People at Gemini Studio had natural aversion to communism. The Moral Rearmament Army (MRA) was a kind of counter movement to international communism. Therefore it was natural that the Moral Rearmament Army welcomed at Gemini Studio.

Q10- Who was The Boss of Gemini Studios?
Ans- Mr. SS Vasan was The Boss of Gemini Studios. He wass also the editor of  the popular Tamil weekly 'Anand Viketan'. He was a hard task master. If he was not satisfied, he could close down a whole department. The closure of the story department proves this fact.

Q11- Why is the Englishman's visit referred to as 'an unexplained mystery'?
Ans- The English visitor to the Gemini Studios was the famous poet named Stephen Spender. The people at the Gemini Studios made simple films for simple Tamils. They had no interest in English poetry. More ever , the English poet spoke on a subject which no one could understand. They also looked perplexed ( confused) . So the Englishman's visit referred to as 'an unexplained mystery'. 

Q12- Who was the English visitor to the Gemini Studios?
Ans- The English visitor to the Gemini Studios was the famous poet named Stephen Spender. He was the editor of a famous magazine also. Once he used to be a follower of communism. But , later he was disillusioned  with it. He and some of his friends jointly wrote a book entitled ' The God that failed' about the failure of communism. 

Q13- What does ' The God that Failed' refer to?
Ans- The book ' The God that Failed' contains six essays written by six eminent man of letters. Stephen Spender , the poet who had visited the Gemini Studios, was one of them. They were all once attracted toward communism. But soon they were disillusioned. ' The God' here is communism and the failure of the God means the failure of communist ideology. 

Q14-  Why was the office-boy frustrated ? On whom did he show his anger ?  
Ans- The office-boy had joined the Gemini Studios in his youth with his dreams. He  had aspired to be a top class actor, director or screen writer. But his dreams were shattered He had to become an office-boy. As a result, he became frustrated. He showed his anger on Subbu. He thought that only Subbu was responsible for his all misery.
