A Thing of Beauty
The poem "A Thing of Beauty " is composed by famous British Romantic poet John Keats (1795-1821) . He was trained to be a surgeon, but Keats decided to devote himself to poetry.
The following is an excerpt from his poem ‘Endymion; A Poetic Romance’. According to a Greek legend, Endymion, a beautiful young shepherd and poet who lived on Mount Latmos, had a vision of Cynthia, the Moon Goddess. The enchanted youth resolved to seek her out and so wandered away through the forest and down under the sea.

"A thing of beauty is a joy forever
Its loveliness increases, it will never
Pass into nothingness; but will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing."

कवि कहता है कि सौंदर्य से परिपूर्ण कोई भी वस्तु हमें सदैव रहने वाली ख़ुशी प्रदान करती है। सुन्दर वस्तु हमारी कल्पना में धुंधली नहीं पड़ती और ना ही कभी यह अपना अस्तित्व खोती है । बल्कि इसकी सुंदरता हमेशा बढ़ती रहती है क्योंकि इसमें हमारी कल्पना के रंग जुड़ते जाते हैं। यह हमारी याद में सदा ताजा रहती है और हमारे लिए किसी घने और शांत वनकुञ्ज का कार्य करती है। अन्य शब्दों में , जब भी हमें गहरी निराशा घेर ले तो हम सुन्दर वस्तु की कल्पना करके अपने मन को शांत व प्रसन्न रख सकते हैं। यह हमें मीठे सपनों से भरी नींद की तरफ ले जाएगी और यह हमारे तन को स्वस्थ व मन को पूर्ण शांत रखेगी।

कवि अपनी बात को आगे समझाते हुए कहता है कि प्रकृति की सुंदरता ही संसार को गतिमान रखने में सहायक है। यह सुंदरता ही है जो प्रत्येक नए दिन हमारे मन में जीवन के प्रति ऊर्जा और प्रेरणा का संचार करती है। सुंदरता एक ऐसा सुन्दर पुष्पहार ( फूलों की माला ) है जो एक सूत्र या बंधन की तरह हमें संसार ( जीवन) से बांधे रखती है। संसार में चारों तरफ इतनी गहरी निराशा और मन को दुखी करने वाली चीजें है कि यदि सुंदरता न हो तो जीवन असंभव हो जाए। पृथ्वी पर भले लोगों की अत्यधिक कमी है।मनुष्य के जीवन में गहरे दुःख के बादल छाए रहते हैं , उसका जीवन दुःख से भरा रहता है। हमारे जीवन में कई बार दुःख प्रदान करने वाली रहस्यमयी बातें घटित हो जाती हैं। हम उनके कारण खोजते रहते हैं और फिर भी हम उन्हें समझ पाने में असमर्थ रहते हैं। इन सबके बावजूद भी केवल सुंदरता ही जीवन में फैली निराशा की चादर ( कफ़न) को हटा सकती है।

कवि प्रकृति में विद्यमान कई सुन्दर व प्रसन्नता प्रदान करने वाली कई चीजों का सूची देता है। जैसे सूर्य , चन्द्रमा, विशाल और पुराने वृक्ष तथा नए विकसित होने वाले ऐसे पौधे जो अनगिनत निरीह पशुओं को शीतल छाया प्रदान करते हैं. वहां हरे भरे मैदानों में सुन्दर नरगिस के फूल हैं। पहाड़ों में से शीतल और स्वच्छ जल देने वाली छोटी छोटी नदियाँ निकल रही हैं जो अपने आप को गर्मी से बचाने के लिए शीतलता देने वाली झाड़ियों के झुण्ड बना लेती हैं. इन सब के अतिरिक्त जंगल के बींचों बीच छोटी छोटी अनेक झाड़ियां भी हैं जिनमे सफेद गुलाब के फूल महक रहें हैं।

कवि अब अपनी कविता को गंभीरता की ओर ले जाता है। वह कहता है कि हमारे शक्तिशाली पूर्वज योद्धा अनंत निद्रा में लीन हैं। हमारे शक्तिशाली पूर्वजों ने इस संसार में अनेकों सकारात्मक व प्रसन्नता बढ़ाने हेतु अनुपम कार्य किए हैं। अंतिम निर्णय के दिन हम उन सबके लिए भगवान से सुन्दर पुरस्कारों की कल्पना करते हैं। इन पुरस्कारों की कल्पना का वैभव हमें असीम ख़ुशी से भर देती है। इसके अतिरिक्त पुराने दिनों की प्यारी कथाएं , जो हमने सुनी या पढ़ी हैं , हमें प्रसन्नता देती हैं। कवि के अनुसार ये सब चीजें अलौकिक पेय( अमृत) के एक अनंत झरने की तरह हैं जो स्वयं भगवान स्वर्ग से हमारे लिए उंडेल रहा है। अर्थात भगवान ने हमें निराशा और दुःख के वातावरण से निकालने के लिए इन समस्त वस्तुओं का निर्माण किया है ताकि हम भी स्वर्ग में रहने वाले देवदूतों जैसी ख़ुशी प्राप्त कर सकें।
