The Rattrap : 12th Class Flamingo

This  lesson is included in our text book : Flamingo ( 12th class) 

यह पाठ हमारी पाठ्य पुस्तक "Flamingo " से लिया गया है। इसे प्रसिद्ध स्वीडिश लेखिका  Selma Lagerlöf  (1858-1940)  ने लिखा है।  वह पहली महिला थी , जिनको  साहित्य के लिए नोबेल पुरस्कार (1909 ) मिला।  स्वीडन पूरे विश्व में लोहे के अयस्कों के लिए प्रसिद्ध है।  स्वीडन की अधिकतर कहानियों में लौह  अयस्क से जुड़े विषयों की भरमार रहती है।  इस कहानी में भी Selma Lagerlöf  ने इसी प्रकार का कथानक बुना है।  

कहानी का मुख्य पात्र  चूहेदानी बनाने वाला एक फेरीवाला है, जिसका वास्तविक नाम कहानी में नहीं बताया गया है। 
स्वीडन के ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में एक बार एक निर्धन फेरीवाला था जो  घूम घूम कर अपनी खुद की बनाई चूहेदानियां  बेचा करता था। वह इतना फटेहाल और गरीब था कि इसके लिए भी वह कबाड़ से लोहा उठाकर ही चूहेदानी बनाया करता था।

एक जगह  से दूसरे जगह फेरी लगाकर चूहेदानियां बेचने के कारण उसकी हालत बिलकुल दयनीय हो चुकी थी। 



उसके कपडे बिलकुल चीथड़े हो चुके थे और उसका शरीर केवल हड्डियों का ढांचा बन गया था। 

परन्तु इतनी भागदौड़ करने के  बाद भी उसे कई कई बार खाना तक नसीब नहीं होता था। इतनी  मेहनत के बाद भी जब कई बार उसकी बिक्री नहीं होती थी तो  वह पूरे संसार के प्रति क्रोध और नफरत से भर  जाता।  और वह अपने ही विचारों में खो जाता। ऐसे  ही एक दिन उसे  सुनसान पगडण्डी पर चलते हुए अनोखा विचार सूझा।  उसने सोचा कि यह सारा संसार भी एक  प्रकार की चूहेदानी जैसा है और संसार का हर आदमी चूहे की तरह है।  जिस प्रकार  चूहे को चूहेदानी में फंसना ही पड़ता है , उसी प्रकार सभी मनुष्यों को भी किसी ना किसी वजह से इसमें फंसना  पड़ता है।  और मनुष्यों को इसमें फंसाने के लिए पैसा ,भूमि या अन्य लालच  फंदे का काम करता है।  कई इसमें फंस चुके हैं और  कई फंसने के लिए इसके बाहर चक्कर लगा रहे हैं। उसे अपने ही अनोखे विचार पर बड़ा आनंद आया। 

एक घनी शाम को वह खाना और आश्रय  ढूंढ रहा था,

तभी उसकी नजर सड़क किनारे एक झोंपड़े पर पड़ी. उसने रात के खाने व ठहरने की अनुमति के लिए दरवाजा  खटखटाया।  दरवाजा एक बूढ़े व्यक्ति ने खोला और प्रसन्नता पूर्वक उसे अंदर बैठाया। उसने उसे भोजन दिया और उसे तम्बाकू भी दिया।  उस आवारा फेरीवाले को अपनी  जिंदगी में इस प्रकार का सम्मान व सत्कार प्राप्त नहीं हुआ था ।उसके बाद उस बूढ़े आदमी ने उसके साथ काफी बातें की और ताश खेलते हुए उसे बताया कि अपनी समृद्धि के दिनों में वह भी रम्सजो आयरन वर्क्स में एक खनिक था. 

अब  उसके पास एक बढ़िया गाय है और उसका दूध बेचकर उसे काफी पैसे मिल जाते हैं।  उसने यह भी बताया कि उसे कल ही दूध की बिक्री के तीस क्रोनॉर (स्वीडन की मुद्रा) मिले हैं। 

बूढ़े आदमी को लगा कि शायद उसके मेहमान को इस बात पर यकीन नहीं हुआ ,इसीलिए उसने फेरीवाले को थैली में से निकाल  कर दस दस के तीन मुड़े हुए क्रोनॉर भी दिखाए और वापिस वह थैली सामने ही खिड़की के पास एक कील में टांग दी।

 

अगली सुबह बूढ़ा आदमी जल्दी उठकर गाय का दूध निकलने के लिए जाने लगा और फेरीवाले ने भी उसे धन्यवाद कहकर अपनी राह ली।  परन्तु फेरीवाला आधे घंटे  बाद ही वापिस  आया।  बूढ़ा आदमी अपने झोंपड़े में नहीं था।  उसने  खिड़की का  शीशा तोड़कर कील पर थैली में टंगे  दस दस के तीनों मुड़े हुए क्रोनॉर निकाल लिए।  इसके बाद वह जंगल के रास्ते की और भागा।उसने जानबूझकर सड़क की बजाय घने जंगल के बीच में  से    जाने की  सोची।  वह अपनी चतुराई पर बहुत खुश हो रहा था।

वह जंगल में बिलकुल सीधा चलता रहा परन्तु काफी देर तक चलते रहने के बाद भी उसे कोई रास्ता नहीं मिला और वह उस घने जंगल में रास्ता भटक गया।  दोपहर तक उसका भूख और प्यास से बुरा हाल हो चुका  था।  उसने अपने आप को चारों  तरफ जंगल से घिरे  हुए पाया। अब उसे अपने आप के बारे में सोचा और अपनी तुलना उस  चूहे से की ,जो तीस क्रोनॉर के  चारे के लालच के कारण  जंगल रुपी पिंजरे में बुरी तरह फंस चुका था।

दिसंबर का  महीना होने के कारण ठण्ड भी बढ़ चुकी थी और जल्दी ही घना अँधेरा भी छा  गया।  वह भूख ,प्यास और थकावट के कारण निढाल होकर जमीन पर गिर गया।  उसे अपना अंत नजदीक ही नजर आया।  

तभी उसे दूर से एक लगातार धमक की आवाज सुनाई दी , जो निश्चित तौर पर किसी लोहे की भठ्ठी में हथौड़े की चोट की आवाज थी।  
रम्सजो आयरन वर्क्स नजदीक ही था  और वह पूरी ताकत लगाकर  आवाज की दिशा में दौड़ा।  
उसे थोड़े दूर पर  एक रोशनी दिखी। एक फैक्ट्री में भठ्ठी पर कच्चे लोहे को पिघलाने का काम चल रहा था।  मुख्य कारीगर और उसका सहायक भठ्ठी के पास पसीने से तरबतर काफी मेहनत से अपने काम में लगे हुए थे।  काफी शोर होने के कारण उन्हें उस आवारा फेरीवाले के अंदर आने का आभास उस समय तक नहीं हो पाया जब तक की वह आकर उनकी भठ्ठी के समीप खड़ा नहीं हो गया । फेरीवाले ने रात को रुकने ही अनुमति मांगी और मुख्य कारीगर ने उपेक्षा दिखाते  हुए घमंड की मुद्रा में बिना कुछ कहे स्वीकृति प्रदान कर  दी।निर्धन फेरीवाला गर्माहट पाने के लिए भठ्ठी के पास ही लेट गया।

 

उस फैक्ट्री का मालिक सेना का एक पूर्व अधिकारी था, जो अपनी फैक्ट्री में अक्सर रात के  निरिक्षण के लिए आ जाता था  ।उस दिन  आते ही उसकी नजर भठ्ठी के पास सोए हुए आवारा फेरीवाले पर पड़ी।  वह नाराजगी भरी मुद्रा में उस के पास गया और  उसका भद्दा सा हैट उठाकर उसके चेहरे को ध्यान से  देखा।  और  हैरान होते हुए कहा, ''अरे ! तुम नील्स ओलोफ "

( आयरन मास्टर ने अँधेरे में  अच्छी तरह  पहचान न पाने के  कारण  उसे अपना  एक पुराना  साथी कैप्टेन  वॉन स्टेहल समझा. )

फेरीवाले कुछ भी समझ नहीं पाया।  उसने अब से पहले आयरन मास्टर को कभी नहीं देखा था। फिर भी उसने कहा कि मेरी जिंदगी में बहुत बुरा घटित हुआ है। क्रिसमस का त्यौहार नजदीक था और  आयरन मास्टर उसे अपने घर ले  जाना चाहता था।  परन्तु इस बात पर फेरीवाला काफी घबरा गया और उसने घर जाने के लिए बिलकुल मना कर दिया। 

आयरन मास्टर ने उससे एक दो बार और कहा परन्तु वह घर जाने के लिए मना करता रहा।  
आयरन मास्टर घर गया और उसने अपनी बेटी एडला विलमैनसन  को भेजा।  वह एक दयालु और नेक लड़की थी। 

वह एक घोडा गाड़ी लेकर  अपने नौकर के साथ फैक्ट्री में गई और उससे घर जाने का आग्रह किया।  एडला ने उसे एक गरम कोट दिया।  उस की बातों से फेरीवाले ने कुछ आत्मविश्वास महसूस किया।  काफी आग्रह के बाद वह उसे अपने घर ले आई।  


अगली सुबह  तक फेरीवाले को अच्छी  तरह नहलाकर ,शेविंग  करने के बाद  बढ़िया कपडे पहना दिए गए थे।  जब उसे नाश्ते की मेज पर लाया गया तो आयरन  मास्टर ने अब उसे अच्छी तरह पहचान लिया कि  यह उसका पुराना  मित्र नहीं था,  अब उसे अपनी गलती का अहसास हुआ।  उसने फेरीवाले पर क्रोधित होते हुए उसे बुरा भला कहा  और उसे धोखेबाज कहा।   परन्तु फेरीवाले ने कहा कि इस में उसकी  कोई गलती नहीं थी और वह घर पर अपनी मर्जी से नहीं आया था।   आयरन मास्टर  ने तुरंत उसे अपने घर से निकलने के लिए कहा. परन्तु उसकी नेक बेटी एडला ने फेरीवाले के प्रति सहानुभूति दर्शाते हुए उसे क्रिसमस तक रुकने के लिए कहा।  

वह मानती थी कि गलती से ही सही , वह उनका अतिथि है और कम से कम इस बार  तो बेचारा फेरीवाले उनके साथ ही क्रिसमस मनाए। 
आयरन मास्टर ने नाराज होकर ही सही,परन्तु अपनी बेटी की बात मान  ली।  

अगली सुबह आयरन मास्टर और उसकी बेटी क्रिसमस की प्रार्थना के लिए चर्च गए। फेरीवाला घर पर  ही आराम करता रहा।चर्च में आयरन मास्टर और उसकी बेटी को पता चला कि दो तीन दिन पहले सड़क किनारे रहने वाले एक बूढ़े आदमी के तीस क्रॉनोर चोरी हो गए हैं।चोरी का पूरा शक एक आवारा फेरीवाले पर है जो रात को उसके पास ही रुका था।

यह बात सुनकर आयरन मास्टर घबरा गया और उसे पक्का यकीन हो गया  कि उसके घर में रुका हुआ आदमी ही चोर है।जल्दी से वह अपनी बेटी के साथ वापिस घर आया ।आते ही उसने नौकरों से उस अजनबी आदमी के बारे में पूछा।नौकरों ने कहा कि वह जा चुका था। आयरन मास्टर ने सरसरी तौर पर घर के कीमती को देखा। सब कुछ ठीक था।

परंतु बाद में नौकरों ने बताया कि वह  एडला के लिए एक पत्र और एक क्रिसमस गिफ्ट छोड़ कर गया है।।उदास मन ने एडला ने वह गिफ्ट खोलकर देखा। उसमे एक छोटी सी चूहे दानी थी जो उस फेरीवाले ने खुद बनाई थी।और दस दस क्रोनोर के तीन नोट रखे हुए थे।साथ ही भद्दी सी लिखावट में एक पत्र था जिसे फेरीवाले ने एडला के लिए लिखा था।उसने एडला को दिल से धन्यवाद देते हुए उसके नेक और सहानुभूति पूर्वक व्यवहार की प्रशंसा की थी। साथ ही चुराए  गए तीस क्रोनॉर  उसी बूढ़े आदमी को पहुँचाने की प्रार्थना भी  की।  

पत्र से लग रहा था कि एडला की अच्छाई और दयालुता पूर्ण व्यवहार से  वह काफी प्रभावित हुआ था और वह भी सदा के  लिए वह भी एक अच्छा और नेक इंसान बन कर जीवन बिताएगा ।अंत में उसने अपने हस्ताक्षर कर रखे थे जो कैप्टन वॉन स्टेहल के नाम से थे ।

Ans.    

The peddler used to sell small rattraps made of iron. He used to collect iron scraps and wires by begging in the big iron stores.

One day ,the peddler was walking along a roadside with his rattraps . Suddenly an amusing idea came to his mind that the whole world is like a big rattrap. Its riches, food , shelter and joy are a trap for man . Some had already been caught in the snare and some were waiting . 

Q3. Why was he amused by his idea ?

Ans.  

He got nothing good from the world . The world had been very cruel and apathetic for him. So, it gave him an unwonted pleasure to think ill of it in this way.

The crofter had been living alone in the cottage, without a family. He was very happy to get someone to talk with him.

The peddler had stolen the crofter's money. In order to avoid being caught, he entered in a thick forest. He wanted to pass it but he couldn't find a way out the dense forest. He walked and walked and tired to death. 

Now he thought that his own turn had come and he had fallen into a rattrap.

Q9  Why did the ironmaster speak kindly to the peddler and invite him home?

Ans.  

The ironmaster mistook him one of his old regimental friend Captain  Von Stahle. He felt a deep pity on him over his miserable condition. Christmas Eve was near and he wanted to give him some happiness. So,he invited him home.

Q10  Why did the peddler decline the iron master's invitation to come to his home ?

Ans.  

The peddler was feeling very embarrassed . He had the crofter's stolen money. He thought it unsafe to go with the ironmaster. He might be caught. So he declined the iron master's invitation.

Ans. 

Edla was a very noble and nice girl . Her manners were very friendly. The peddler felt some confidence before her. Edla also assured him that he would be free to leave their house whenever he liked. So, the peddler accepted her invitation.

The peddler left a gift of a rattrap, thirty kronor and a letter for Edla . He thanked Edla  for her kindness. He also requested her to return the stolen money of the old crofter. Her  behavior had transformed a thief . So, she was happy to see the gift.

Q17  Why did the peddler sign himself as Captain Von Stahle?

The peddler had been invited by the iron master as Captain Von Stahle. He had been welcomed and treated as Captain in his house.  This "name and identity" shook  his conscience and he decided to change his ways. This episode also  saved him from the rattrap of the world.  That is why he signed himself as Captain Von Stahle. 

Q18  What made the peddler finally change his ways?

Ans.

This was the kindness and nobility of Edla Willmansson which made the peddler finally change his way.The  real identity of the peddler had been disclosed and he was told to  leave their house at once by  her father .   But she came  to his rescue . She was certain that this was not the fault of the peddler . She tried her best to make the poor man feel at home . Her sympathy transformed the peddler completely.

Next morning ,the peddler left the house and he left a gift of a rattrap, thirty kronor and a letter for Edla . He thanked Edla  for her kindness. He also requested her to return the stolen money of the old crofter. Her  behavior had transformed a thief . 

Thus the peddler was moved by Edla's kindness and sympathy. Love, affection and understanding awakened his essential goodness. This shows that he was not a criminal by nature but a victim of circumstances .
