Summary with Explanation:-
(Lines 1-6)
The little old house was out with a little new shed
In front at the edge of the road where the traffic sped,
A roadside stand that too pathetically pled,
It would not be fair to say for a dole of bread,
But for some of the money, the cash, whose flow supports
The flower of cities from sinking and withering faint.
(Lines 7-15)
The polished traffic passed with a mind ahead,
Or if ever aside a moment, then out of sorts
At having the landscape marred with the artless paint
Of signs that with N turned wrong and S turned wrong
Offered for sale wild berries in wooden quarts,
Or crook-necked golden squash with silver warts,
Or beauty rest in a beautiful mountain scene,
You have the money, but if you want to be mean,
Why keep your money (this crossly) and go along.
(Lines 16-22)
The hurt to the scenery wouldn’t be my complaint
So much as the trusting sorrow of what is unsaid:
Here far from the city we make our roadside stand
And ask for some city money to feel in hand
To try if it will not make our being expand,
And give us the life of the moving-pictures’ promise
That the party in power is said to be keeping from us.
(Lines 23-31)
It is in the news that all these pitiful kin
Are to be bought out and mercifully gathered in
To live in villages, next to the theatre and the store,
Where they won’t have to think for themselves anymore,
While greedy good-doers, beneficent beasts of prey,
Swarm over their lives enforcing benefits
That are calculated to soothe them out of their wits,
And by teaching them how to sleep they sleep all day,
Destroy their sleeping at night the ancient way.
(Lines 32-41)
Sometimes I feel myself I can hardly bear
The thought of so much childish longing in vain,
The sadness that lurks near the open window there,
That waits all day in almost open prayer
For the squeal of brakes, the sound of a stopping car,
Of all the thousand selfish cars that pass,
Just one to inquire what a farmer’s prices are.
And one did stop, but only to plow up grass
In using the yard to back and turn around;
And another to ask the way to where it was bound;
(Lines 42-43)
And another to ask could they sell it a gallon of gas
They couldn’t (this crossly); they had none, didn’t it see?
(Lines 44-51)
No, in country money, the country scale of gain,
The requisite lift of spirit has never been found,
Or so the voice of the country seems to complain,
I can’t help owning the great relief it would be
To put these people at one stroke out of their pain.
I wonder how I should like you to come to me
And offer to put me gently out of my pain.

Textual Exercise :-
Q1-Where was the roadside stand put up and what for ?
Ans-The roadside stand was put up in front of an old little house . It was on the edge of a road. A lot of traffic went that road. The poor owner of that stand had some vegetables and fruits to sell. He hoped to earn some money by selling them.
Q2-What were the various things put up at the stand for sale ?
Ans- There were some wild berries put in wooden quarts. Then there were some golden squash with silver warts on their bodies.
Q3- What was the plea of the folk who had put up the roadside stand ?
Ans-Those who had put up a roadside stand were poor farmers. They hoped to earn some money by selling some vegetables and fruits to rich city people. They did not want any dole of bread from the passengers . They only wanted to earn some money in an honest and dignified (सम्मान जनक ) way.
Q4-What is the ' childish longing' that the poet refers to ? Why is it 'vain' ?
Ans- The poor farmer kept waiting all day fore some car to stop at his stand. But hardly any car stops to buy anything from him. The farmer keeps sitting by the open window and waiting for all day with a longing heart. But his longing proves 'vain' when no one comes to buy the things he has put up foe sale.
Q5-What was it that troubled the poet ?
Ans- Frost saw how the poor man kept waiting for some car to stop and buy at his roadside stand. ' Polished traffic' passed that way in a large number but none bothered to stop and buy there. The farmer keeps sitting by the open window and waiting for all day with a longing heart. It was this pathetic wait that troubled the poet .
Q6- What was the complaint about 'the artless paint of sign' ?
Ans- The stand owner had got his shed painted. He had put some things for sale. There were some signs to indicate perhaps certain direction or to indicate his things for sale . But the rich men passing from that road thought that the artless paints of sign spoiled the beauty of the landscape.
Q7-What was in the news? What did the greedy good-doer , beneficent beasts of prey actually do?
Ans- There were all sorts of false promises in the news. It was in the news that the poor farmers would be paid for their small holdings and settled in villages near the city. They were assured that they would not have to worry about their sorrows. But , in fact , the greedy good-doer do such things only to fool the poor.
Q8- How does the poet mention some of the cars that stop at the stand?
Ans- Some cars stop at the stand , but for other reasons. One of the cars stops there just to turn back. Another car stops to ask if they buy petrol. A third car stops to ask the the way to it's destination.
Q9- Why does Robert Frost sympathise with the rural poor farmer ?
Ans- The poet sees how the poor man keeps waiting all the day for some car to stop at his stand to buy some thing. Many cars pass that way but none stops there to buy anything. The poor villager is left waiting in sorrow. The plight of that poor man fills Frost with the sympathy for the helpless rural poor.
Q10- What is the central idea / theme of the poem ' A Roadside Stand' ?
Ans- The central idea or theme of this poem is that money is required for all kinds of human progress. It is essential for the basic needs of daily life. But in rural areas, circulation of money is almost negligible. So without money and development, the rural people remain in a miserable condition. The poet advocates the view that in the country's economic policies and statistics, the well-being of the villagers has never been considered.
