The Midnight Visitor: Class 10th

 

रहस्य और रोमांच से भरपूर इस कहानी के लेखक हैं -रोबर्ट आर्थर। इस कहानी में जासूसों के काम करने के तरीके, उनके सामने आने वाले खतरे और उनसे निपटने के लिए  उनके कौशल के बारे में प्रकाश डाला गया है। जासूसों की एक रहस्यमयी दुनिया होती है और इसी रहस्यमयी  दुनिया के बारे में और अधिक जानने के लिए Fowler नाम का एक लेखक इस कहानी के नायक Ausable से मिलने के लिए आया ।  Ausable एक Secret Agent (जासूस ) है जो काफी चतुर है , परन्तु वह दिखने में अत्यंत साधारण है और बहुत मोटा भी है। उसके देखने मात्र से कोई भी यह नहीं कह सकता है कि वह एक Secret Agent है।  Fowler उससे मिलकर निराश हुआ  क्योंकि उसके मन में जासूसों की एक अलग ही  छवि बनी हुई  थी।  वह सोचता था कि जासूस   हर समय Active  और Mysterious दिखते हैं और  वे अपने साथ हर समय पिस्तौल रखते है, इत्यादि।  

  

Fowler पूरे दिन उसके साथ रहा परन्तु उसे पुरे दिन कोई ऐसी विशेष  बात नजर नहीं आई जिसके लिए वह Ausable से मिलने के लिए आया था ताकि वह जासूसों के बारे में कोई Thrilling कहानी लिख सके।     

रात को वह Ausable के साथ उसके होटल में गया।  रास्ते में Ausable ने उसे बताया कि आज रात उसे  एक अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण और गोपनीय फाइल प्राप्त होने वाली है, जिसमे किसी मिसाइल के बारे में खास जानकारी है । उस फाइल के लिए कई जासूस अपनी जिंदगी से खेल चुके थे।  Ausable का कमरा होटल की छठी मंजिल पर था।  वह Ausable के साथ कमरे में प्रविष्ट हुआ और Ausable ने दरवाजा बंद कर दिया।  जैसे ही उन्होंने लाइट्स ऑन की तो Fowler को एकदम से अत्यंत हैरत और रोमांच का अनुभव हुआ।  उसने देखा कि एक आदमी हाथ में छोटी  स्वचालित पिस्टल लेकर पहले से ही कमरे में था।  पिस्टल का निशाना उनकी तरफ था। Ausable ने उसे पहचान लिया था।  वह Max था जो    Ausable की तरह ही एक Secret Agent था। वह दुबला पतला था और लोमड़ी की तरह   चालाक दिखाई दे रहा था। Max ने पता कर लिया था कि आज रात Ausable को किसी मिसाइल से सम्बंधित महत्वपूर्ण फाइल मिलने वाली थी। 

Max को अचानक   कमरे में पिस्टल के साथ देखकर भी Ausable शांत रहा। वह एक आराम कुर्सी पर बैठ गया  और  कहा कि मैं  होटल के प्रबंधकों को इस बात की शिकायत करूँगा कि आज दूसरी बार कोई मेरे कमरे में इस बालकनी में से घुसा है। Fowler ने कमरे की एकमात्र खिड़की की तरफ देखा।  Max ने कहा कि वह बालकनी से नहीं आया था ,उसके पास तो एक Passkey (चोर चाबी) थी जिससे वह  अंदर आया।  इस पर Ausable ने जवाब दिया कि यह मेरे  कमरे की बालकनी नहीं है ,यह साथ वाले कमरे से लगती है।  साथ वाले एक बड़े कमरे में कुछ फेर बदल किए गए थे जिसकी वजह से उस कमरे की बालकनी मेरे कमरे की खिड़की के नीचे पड़ती है।  पिछले महीने उस बालकनी के द्वारा एक आदमी मेरे कमरे में आ गया था जिसकी मैंने शिकायत भी की थी।  और मेरी शिकायत के बाद होटल प्रबंधकों ने इसे  तुरंत बंद करने का वचन भी दिया था। लेकिन अब तक भी उन्होंने इसे बंद नहीं करवाया है। इस पर Max ने कहा कि यदि उसे बालकनी के बारे में पहले ही  पता होता तो यह उसके लिए काफी सुविधाजनक होता।  

अब Ausable ने कहा कि  फाइल आने में अभी आधा घंटा बचा हुआ है  और उन्हें तब तक इंतज़ार करना होगा । Max ने धूर्तता से मुस्कुराते हुए  कहा कि वह आज रात हर हाल में वह फाइल प्राप्त करके रहेगा।  

तभी दरवाजे पर जोर की खटखटाहट हुई।  Max और Fowler चौंक पड़े परन्तु Ausable मुस्कुरा रहा था।  उसने बताया कि दरवाजे पर अवश्य ही पुलिस होगी , क्योंकि महत्वपूर्ण फाइल की  अतिरिक्त सुरक्षा के लिए उसने  ही पुलिस को आने के लिए कहा था।  Max ने क्रोधित होकर कहा कि वह बालकनी में छिपने के लिए जा रहा है और  इस दौरान Ausable   पुलिस को  वापिस भेज दे।  और यदि जरा सी भी होशियारी दिखाने की कोशिश की तो वह गोली चला देगा। 

इतना कहकर Max खिड़की के रास्ते बाहर झूल गया। तभी दरवाजे का हैंडल घूमा और Max ने घबराकर बालकनी की ओर छलांग लगा दी। जैसे ही वह गिरा , एक तेज़ चीख की आवाज सुनाई दी।   उधर कमरे में एक वेटर ने प्रवेश किया जो एक ट्रे में कुछ पेय पदार्थ लेकर आया था।  उसने मेज़ पर सब सामान रखा और चला गया।  बुरी तरह हैरान हो रहे Fowler को कुछ भी समझ में नहीं आ रहा था।  काँपते हुए उसने पुछा --लेकिन..... लेकिन...अब.. .... ...क्या होगा  ..... .  पुलिस कहाँ है ? 

Ausable ने गंभीर मुद्रा जवाब दिया कि  पुलिस नहीं आने वाली थी।  केवल यह वेटर हेनरी ही आने वाला था।  Fowler ने पुछा कि यदि Max वापिस आ गया तो क्या होगा? Ausable ने जवाब दिया कि Max अब कभी वापिस नहीं आएगा।  क्योंकि वहां नीचे कोई बालकनी नहीं थी , वह केवल खिड़की ही थी। ( और वह खिड़की होटल की छठी मंजिल पर थी ) *-*-*-

Ans.--The secret agents have an impression of being active, smart and mysterious persons. They always keep  pistols with them. But Ausable is quite different from them. . He is very fat and looks so simple for his profession. He is not anyhow fit in the image of a secret agent.  

Q2.--Who is Fowler and what is his first authentic thrill of the day?

Ans.--Fowler is a writer and he has come to meet Ausable for an interesting story. He feels disappointed with him.  But later, he has his first authentic thrill of the day in Ausable’s room. He sees a man with automatic pistol in his hand. It was really thrilling.

Q3.--How has Max got in? Why did he do so?

Ans.--Max was also a secret agent.  He unlocked the room with a master key and entered the room. Max was a rival of Ausable.  He knew it well that Ausable was going to get an important paper tonight. Max wanted to take away from him. That was why he had entered his room.  

Q4.--What was someone expected to bring to Ausable’s room?

Ans.--It was a top-secret file about some new missiles. Several men and women had risked their lives to get this paper. This paper could change the course of history.

Q5.--Who was in Ausable’s room? What was in his hand?

Ans.--It was Max in Ausable’s room. He was another secret agent and a rival of Ausable. Ha had a small automatic pistol in his hand.

Q6.--Who was it that knocked at Ausable’s room?

Ans.--It was the waiter , Henry, who knocked at Ausable’s door. Ausable had already placed an order for a drink. The waiter had come to deliver it.   

Q7.--What did Ausable tell Max when he heard a knock at the door?

Ans.--He told him that it could be police. He further said that he wanted some extra protection for such an important paper so, he himself had asked them to come.

Q8--Was there any balcony outside the window?

Ans.--No, there wasn’t any balcony outside the window. It was just a story made by Ausable to trap Max.  And finally he succeeded. Max jumped out of this window and died.

Q9--How did Ausable get rid of Max?

Ans.-Ausable played a game with Max. Max had a pistol in his hand. Ausable created a story of balcony. At this point , the door  was knocked . Ausable said that it could be the police. Max jumped on  the balcony to hide himself. But there was no balcony! Thus Ausable got rid of Max.   

Q10--What role did the non-existent balcony play in the story, ‘The Midnight Visitor’ ?

Ans.--The non-existent balcony plays an important role in the story. Ausable creates a story of the balcony which was nowhere. But Max believes this made-up story. He jumps on to the balcony to hide himself from the police . But, as we know, there is no balcony. Thus non-existent balcony plays a decisive role in this story.

Q11--Write a character sketch of Ausable.

Ans.--Ausable is a secret agent. He is very fat and looks so simple for his profession. He is not anyhow fit in the image of a secret agent. But he proves it well that he is completely fit for his job. He is extremely clever. He has a good presence of mind. 

When his rival , Max , entered his room with a pistol to take away an important file , he gets rid from him in a very smart way. Ausable creates a story of the balcony which was nowhere. But Max believes this made-up story. He jumps on to the balcony to hide himself from the police . Thus we can say that Ausable is quite smart and excellent secret agent.
