इस कहानी में दो पात्र हैं --एक है अनिल ,जो लगभग 25 वर्ष का भला और सरल हृदय का नवयुवक है और दूसरा है स्वयं चोर ,जिसकी आयु 15 वर्ष है। उसने अनिल को अपना नाम हरि सिंह बताया जो उसका असली नाम नहीं है। पूरी कहानी खुद चोर ही वर्णन करता है ।
इतनी छोटी उम्र के बावजूद भी वह चोरी करने में बड़ा माहिर हो चुका था और लगभग हर महीने में एक चोरी करने के बाद अपना नाम व शहर बदल लेता था ताकि पुलिस व अपने पहले के मालिकों से बच सके।
हरी सिंह ने उसके पास आकर थोड़ी बातचीत की और उसके लिए काम करने की इच्छा जाहिर की । बिलकुल अकेला रहने के कारण अनिल ने उसे अपने यहाँ खाना बनाए व घर के अन्य काम करने के लिए रख लिया.
परंतु हरि सिंह खाना बनाना नहीं जानता था और उसने रात का जो खाना बनाया , वह इतना खराब था कि उसे कुत्तों ने भी नहीं खाया।परंतु अनिल इस बात पर हरि सिंह से नाराज ना होकर भी मुस्कुराया । और अगले दिन से उसे खाना बनाना सिखाना शुरू कर दिया । हरि सिंह ने धीरे धीरे अन्य कामों, जैसे बाजार से सब्जी व अन्य सामान लाने में सहायता करनी शुरू कर दी । और कभी कभी वह उस खरीददारी में से कुछ पैसे खुद के लिए बचा लेता था ,जिसे अनिल भी जानता था।
अनिल खाली समय में उसे थोड़ा पढ़ना लिखना भी सिखाता था और चाहता था कि वह एक शिक्षित इंसान बन जाए.
चोर को अनिल के यहाँ काम करते हुए लगभग एक महीना हो चुका था। एक दिन अनिल काफी प्रसन्न होते हुए घर आया और बताया कि उसे आज एक पुस्तक बेचकर कुछ पैसे मिले हैं। हरि सिंह ने उसे नोटों का एक बंडल रखते हुए देखा। चोर को जिस सही अवसर की तलाश थी , उसे आज वह मिल गया था और उसने विचार किया कि आज रात को वह चोरी करके हमेशा के लिए यह शहर छोड़ देगा।
चोर के लिए किसी भी अमीर व लालची आदमी को लूटना एक आसान बात थी क्योंकि वे नुकसान सहन कर सकते थे , परन्तु अनिल जैसे लापरवाह और सरल आदमी को लूटना उसके लिए कठिन था क्योंकि वह उस पर बहुत विश्वास करता था।
रात को अनिल के सो जाने के बाद चोर दबे पाँव उसके कमरे में गया और चटाई के नीचे रखे पैसे चुपके से निकाल लिए । और जल्दी से बाहर रेलवे स्टेशन की तरफ भागा । वह रात 10:30 पर जाने वाली लखनऊ एक्सप्रेस गाड़ी को पकड़ना चाहता था। थोड़ा आगे जाने पर रूक कर उसने पैसे गिने । 50 -50 के बारह नोट यानि कुल 600 रूपए, जो उसके लिए काफी थे। अब वह स्टेशन पर पहुँच गया । लखनऊ एक्सप्रेस चलने ही वाली थी और वह आसानी से उसे पकड़ सकता था। लेकिन हरि सिंह ने ऐन वक्त पर अपना फैसला बदल लिया और गाड़ी को जाने दिया। सुनसान प्लेटफार्म को छोड़कर वह बाजार की तरफ चल पड़ा। चलते -चलते उसने अनिल के बारे में सोचा । उसके अनुसार चोरी हो जाने पर लालची आदमी डरता है ,अमीर आदमी क्रोधित होता है और गरीब आदमी इसे चुपचाप स्वीकार कर लेता है। जब अनिल को चोरी के बारे में पता चलेगा तो वह अवश्य ही दुखी होगा परन्तु पैसों की चोरी पर नहीं, बल्कि विश्वास के तोड़े जाने पर।
हरि सिंह वापिस चुपके से अनिल के कमरे में गया। अनिल अब भी नींद में था। हरी सिंह ने सावधानी से सारे पैसे चटाई के नीचे सरका दिए।
अगली सुबह हरि सिंह देर तक सोता रहा और जब वह सोकर उठा तो उसने देखा कि अनिल उसके लिए चाय लेकर खड़ा था। अनिल ने उसकी तरफ 50 रूपए का नोट बढ़ाते हुए कहा कि उसे कल कुछ रूपए मिले थे और अब वह उसे समय पर तनख्वाह दे दिया करेगा। हरि सिंह ने हक्का बक्का होते हुए 50 रूपए का नोट पकड़ा ,जो गीला था। वह चौंका, यानि अनिल को पता चल गया था कि पैसे भीगे हुए क्यों है ? परन्तु अनिल ने यह बिलकुल भी प्रकट होने नहीं दिया कि उसे सारी घटना का पता चल चुका था। बल्कि वह सरलता से मुस्कुराया और कहा कि आज हम वाक्य लिखना सीखेंगे । हरि सिंह भी वापस मुस्कुराया परन्तु अब की बार उसकी मुस्कराहट बिना प्रयास के , सच्चे मन से निकली थी ।
